Degree Apprenticeship Case Study

Case Study: Harrison Holmes, IT Support

Harrison joined Pricecheck in 2021 for his degree apprenticeship, studying towards a ‘Bachelor of Science with Honours in Digital and Technology Solutions Professional’. Over the years, he has been an asset to the team and recently graduated with first-class honours.

Here's what Harrison has to say about his journey at Pricecheck, and why an apprenticeship was the right choice for him.

Why did you decide to go down the degree apprenticeship route?

I knew that doing a degree apprenticeship would help me develop my business sense and employment skills, alongside studying subjects within IT consulting – the best of both worlds.

Being able to apply my learnings to my role at Pricecheck helped me gain a more in-depth understanding of the topics.

What have you enjoyed the most?

I have enjoyed experiencing the world of work without missing out on the student experience. I was still able to take part in exciting projects, volunteer, and socialise with the university.

What are the main skills you’ve developed during this time?

Communication – I learnt how to ensure the correct information is logged/passed onto members of my team, ensuring projects and tasks were completed on time and correctly.

IT Project Management – I learnt the importance of project management within IT and how to ensure a project was correctly implemented and managed to produce the best outcome.

IT Consultation – I now know of the importance of investigating and consulting on IT solutions; there are multiple products and systems that can be used to increase efficiency within different processes.

Is a degree apprenticeship something you would recommend to others?

I would highly recommend a degree apprenticeship - not only do you learn key industry skills, but you can also apply your learning to your role, making the most of your studies.

My understanding of concepts from my course, as well as the invaluable experience, will help me to develop in my career.

The guidance you receive comes from both the workplace and the university, meaning you have plenty of support along the way.

What advice would you give to someone starting a degree apprenticeship?

·         Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

·         Make use of the opportunity to apply your learnings.

·         Spot the correlations between your course and everyday tasks to help your understanding.

·         Utilise the knowledge of the experts around you.
